Dental Extractions

Sometimes, tooth extraction becomes necessary due to various dental issues. Whether it's a wisdom tooth or a tooth damaged by trauma, we understand that the experience can be unpleasant. At Goodday Dental Care in Orange, CA, we strive to make this procedure as painless and comfortable as possible.

Reasons for Tooth Extraction

Dr. Kim may recommend a tooth extraction for several reasons. Teeth may need to be removed due to severe decay, advanced periodontal disease, or irreparable damage. Some teeth are extracted because they are poorly positioned in the mouth (such as impacted teeth), or in preparation for orthodontic treatment.

Removing a tooth can affect your chewing ability, jaw joint, and cause teeth to shift, impacting your overall dental health. To prevent these issues, Dr. Kim will discuss alternatives to extraction and possible replacement options for the extracted tooth.

The Extraction Process

Preparation and Anesthesia

During the extraction, Dr. Kim will numb the tooth, jawbone, and surrounding gums with a local anesthetic to ensure comfort.

Extraction Procedure

You will feel pressure during the extraction process due to the firm rocking of the tooth to widen the socket for removal. While the anesthetic blocks pain, you will still sense the pressure. If you experience any pain, inform us immediately.

Post-Operative Care

After the extraction, it's crucial for a blood clot to form to stop bleeding and initiate healing. Bite on a gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes immediately after the procedure. If bleeding persists, replace the gauze and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. Repeat this process as necessary. Also use cold water dipped black tea bag inside the gauze to help with stop bleeding.

Aftercare Instructions

Medications and Diet

Continue taking pain medication as directed if needed for pain. If prescribed antibiotics, complete the course even if symptoms of infection disappear. Drink plenty of fluids and consume nutritious, soft foods on the day of the extraction. Avoid HOT/Spicy food. Do NOT use straw and Do NOT spit.

Oral Hygiene

Maintain your usual dental routine, including brushing and flossing, to speed up healing and keep your mouth clean.
